Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for the motors of Sea Water Pumps, LT Fresh Water Pumps and Engine Room Fans are a widely applied solution with tangible benefits.
Reduction of motor frequency (hence rpm) results in great Power (hence Energy) Savings.
According to Affinity Laws, the Power is proportional to the cube of the shaft speed.
Therefore, even a 20% speed reduction , results in abt 50% electric Power reduction.
i.e P1/P2 = (n1/n2)3
The sea water and LT fresh water systems, as well as Engine Room Fans’ systems, are designed during NB stage considering “worst” case conditions (i.e high s.w and ambient air temperatures, as well as max Engines’ loads) and are continuously operating at max Power.
However, the actual operating conditions of the vessel allow for an adjustable operation, according to actual cooling needs, with great potential for electrical energy savings.
ADD Marine undertakes along with its partners:
- Review of vessel data (piping and electrical drawings, as well as sailing patterns and actual operating conditions)
- Evaluation and Calculation of anticipated Electrical Energy (and fuel) savings. ROI Case Study.
- Impact (improvement) on regulatory KPIs (e.g CII, EEOI, SEEMP, FuelEU, EU ETS, etc)
- Feasibility Study
- Proposal for the optimum scope of equipment
- Turn-key installation, either during DD or afloat (incl. owners’ supply items)
- Commissioning
